Shipping a Car from Canada to the U.S. (and Vice Versa)

How Cross-Border Auto Shipping Works

Shipping a vehicle between Canada and the United States typically involves these key steps:

1. Vehicle Eligibility & Compliance

Not all vehicles are eligible to be imported or exported across the border. Before arranging transport, you’ll need to confirm that your vehicle meets the safety and emissions standards required in the destination country. This includes checking with:

  • Transport Canada (for vehicles entering Canada)

  • U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (for vehicles entering the U.S.)

2. Customs Documentation

You’ll need to prepare and submit several documents to clear customs:

  • Bill of sale or proof of ownership

  • Title or registration

  • Customs declaration forms (CBSA or CBP)

  • Import/export permits (if required)

In many cases, these documents must be submitted at least 72 hours before the vehicle crosses the border.

3. Border Inspections and Duties

Vehicles may be subject to inspection by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Depending on the vehicle type, age, and origin, import duties or taxes may apply.
